Fourth Grade is a year that begins the bridging process between the primary grades and the middle school. Emphasis is placed on following directions, both oral and written, as the children take on the responsibility for a significantly greater workload. This is in preparation for the four State and County Tests administered during the month of April, and their success throughout the years.
Reading/Language Arts:
The goal of the fourth grade reading program is to enable each student to monitor his or her own reading comprehension on an independent level. This is achieved through the teaching and practice of comprehension strategies, oral and written vocabulary building, critical thinking skills, and word analysis. Our reading curriculum is multicultural and integrated with other subject areas. You will find us reading novels relating to certain eras of history we are studying.
Writing:
Students will do creative as well as expository writing. Fourth graders are expected to produce complete simple sentences and begin to expand them into longer more sophisticated sentences with the use of adverbs, adjectives, and conjunctions; as well as similes, metaphors, and personifications. Different forms of writing require students to summarize, give opinions, and compare and contrast reading selections with the use of significant supportive details. The length of the students writing also expands with numerous paragraphs.
Social Studies:
The fourth grade social studies curriculum begins with Geography, causes of the Revolutionary War, Revoluntionary War, westward expansion, Causes of the Civil War, Civil War, and reconstruction.
Math:
The fourth grade math curriculum can be very challenging. Mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts are essential for student success and will greatly help them as the year progresses and content becomes more difficult. Daily lessons will emphasize computation, estimation, problem solving, and critical thinking.
Science:
The Science program is an excellent blend of rich curriculum and hands on learning. The students will experience the scientific process by participating in lab experiments that allow them to see the concepts that are learned in the textbook. The Science content includes solar system, light, sound ,weather, and roles of organisms.
Helpful Hints for Parents and Their Child To Start the Year:
Many of the issues concerning success in school revolve around developing good study habits and expectations regarding homework. Parents can certainly play a major role in providing the encouragement, environment, and materials necessary for successful studying to take place at home and in school.
